The Kebbi State Government has significantly increased the monthly cash allocation to its four state-owned tertiary institutions from ₦10.5 million to ₦40 million.
The Commissioner for Higher Education, Isa Abubakar Tunga, announced the development during a press conference in Birnin Kebbi. He said Governor Nasir Idris approved the increment as part of his commitment to revitalising the state’s higher education sector.
Before now, Adamu Augie College of Education in Argungu received ₦2 million, the College of Health Science and Technology, Jega, ₦1.5 million, the College of Advanced and Legal Studies, Yauri, ₦5 million, and Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari, ₦2 million monthly. Each institution will now receive ₦10 million monthly.
Accreditation and Student Support Funding Released
The Commissioner further disclosed that the state has released ₦96 million to support course accreditation and other academic interventions. Of the total, ₦60 million was earmarked for the accreditation of seven National Diploma (ND) courses by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) at the College of Health Science and Technology, Jega.
These courses include ND in Community Health, Environmental Health, Health Information Management, Nutrition and Dietetics, Public Health, Medical Laboratory, and Pharmacy Technician.
In addition, about ₦36 million has been disbursed to regularise the status of 556 unindexed students from the 2023/2024 academic session across key departments at the College.
Governor Committed to Education Reform
Commissioner Tunga emphasised that Governor Idris’s focus on education is aimed at building local capacity and fostering innovation, teaching, and research excellence in Kebbi State.
“Investment in the higher education sector is critical with a view to creating and developing skills and expertise for teaching, research, innovation and invention,” he said.
The government’s intervention is seen as a bold step toward strengthening the capacity and accreditation status of institutions across the state.
