Liverpool Football Club and the global football community have been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Portuguese international forward, Diogo Jota, who was confirmed dead in a car crash in Spain. He was 28.
Jota died alongside his younger brother, André Silva, 26, in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and burst into flames in the Zamora province of north-western Spain.
The fatal crash occurred just after midnight, according to Spanish emergency services and media reports. The car reportedly lost control and caught fire after hitting a barrier. Witnesses at the scene said the flames spread rapidly, engulfing the vehicle and nearby vegetation.
Newly Married, Father of Three
The tragedy comes just weeks after Diogo Jota married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in a private ceremony held on June 22. The couple had three children together. His brother, André, also a professional footballer, played for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel.
A Football Career Cut Short
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and became a key figure under manager Jurgen Klopp. Known for his agility, goal-scoring instinct, and tactical intelligence, he helped Liverpool win major titles including the FA Cup, League Cup, and Community Shield.
On the international scene, he earned over 49 caps for the Portuguese national team, scoring 14 goals, and was part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019.
