Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has described the passing of veteran journalist and co-founder of Newswatch Magazine, Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, as a profound blow to Nigeria’s media landscape.
Mohammed, who previously served as Managing Editor of Newswatch and later as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Newswatch Communications Limited, died on Tuesday at the age of 75.
The governor’s condolence message was conveyed in a statement released on Wednesday in Lagos by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile.
Sanwo-Olu said the death of the respected media professional was deeply painful, noting that the industry had lost a towering figure whose experience, insight and mentorship would be greatly missed.
He said Mohammed’s death represented a significant loss not only to journalism in Nigeria, but also to his immediate family, associates and the many individuals whose careers and lives were shaped by his work.
According to the governor, the late journalist was known for his courage, integrity and principled stance, distinguishing himself as an editor, columnist, publisher and media administrator who made lasting contributions to the growth of the profession.
He added that Mohammed served as a mentor to countless journalists, offering guidance and opportunities that helped nurture many professionals who later emerged as influential voices in the media and beyond.
Sanwo-Olu further noted that Mohammed’s service as Pro-Chancellor and later Chancellor of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, reflected his commitment to education, leadership and public service, leaving behind a legacy anchored on professionalism and dedication to truth.
On behalf of the Lagos State Government and its residents, the governor extended condolences to the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Usman Ododo, the Mohammed family and the people of Ologba in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
He also commiserated with Mohammed’s friends, colleagues and the wider Nigerian media community, praying that God grants the deceased eternal rest and gives his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
