Russia has detained British national James Scott Rhys Anderson, 22, accusing him of fighting for Ukraine in its Kursk region. Anderson, a former British Army private, was captured following Ukraine’s incursion into Russian territory in August.
Russian authorities allege Anderson committed terrorism and served as a mercenary, charges that could lead to 20 and 15 years in prison, respectively. Videos show Anderson identifying himself as a member of Ukraine’s International Legion, a unit of foreign volunteers.
This is the first instance of a British fighter captured on Russian soil. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has pledged to provide support for Anderson amid escalating UK-Russia tensions.
