PDP Warns Defectors, Vows to Discipline Disloyal Members Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a strong warning to its members against defection and internal sabotage, reaffirming its unity and readiness for the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, delivered the warning on Wednesday during a press conference at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, following a crucial meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC).
In his address, Damagum expressed the party’s growing concerns over attempts by members to weaken the PDP through public criticism, anti-party activities, and subtle moves to align with rival parties. He declared that the PDP will not hesitate to take “decisive and disciplinary action” against any member found undermining the party’s integrity.
“If you are a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, we are drawing a line for those who go out to de-market the party. We are watching, and we will take appropriate action at the right time,” Damagum said.
He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deploying inducement and intimidation tactics to lure PDP members ahead of the 2027 elections. However, he maintained that the PDP remains strong, united, and capable of regaining power through the will of the Nigerian people.
“To the APC, I send a clear message: you may continue to harass and attempt to lure our members, but the 2027 election will be determined by the Nigerian people, not by your manoeuvres,” Damagum stated.
He lambasted the APC-led federal government over its failure to tackle critical issues such as hunger, insecurity, and the abuse of citizens’ rights, urging the ruling party to reflect and change its ways.
“It is time for you to reflect and correct your ways. The issues of hunger, insecurity, and the arbitrary treatment of Nigerians are overwhelming and unacceptable,” he said.
Damagum reaffirmed the PDP’s position as Nigeria’s most resilient political party with deep grassroots structures, democratic values, and a long-standing record of delivering people-centered governance.
“There is no political party as accommodating and democratic as the PDP. Our policies are not designed to benefit a privileged few but the general populace,” he added.
He urged loyal PDP members to remain committed and act as ambassadors of the party across the country. While acknowledging that some individuals may be tempted to defect, he expressed confidence that they would eventually return, having recognized the uniqueness of the PDP.
“To those contemplating leaving, I advise against it. There is no party as structured and accommodating as ours. But if they choose to go, I wish them well, though I am confident they will return,” Damagum said.
The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is scheduled to convene between July 23 and 25 to discuss strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
