Abuja, Nigeria – A powerful new political coalition has emerged in Nigeria, led by top opposition figures including Peter Obi, Senator David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and a host of former governors, ministers, and APC stalwarts. The coalition has officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 general elections.
This landmark announcement was made during a gathering at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where leading figures from the PDP, Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and others declared a united front to “rescue Nigeria” from deepening insecurity, economic hardship, and failed leadership.
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, issued a stirring statement affirming his commitment to the coalition, urging Nigerians to look beyond ethnic, religious, or party divides to reclaim their country:
“A New Nigeria is possible. This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward. No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls — even when those bridges are uneasy.”
Obi emphasized that the coalition’s goal is to ensure competent, capable, and compassionate leadership for Nigeria, focused on national unity and the well-being of all citizens.
David Mark, Aregbesola to Lead ADC
The coalition also announced that former Senate President David Mark will serve as National Chairman, while ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has been appointed National Secretary. Their leadership is expected to galvanize support across party lines and regional divides.
The move signals a dramatic political realignment aimed at challenging the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 elections.
Ex-Attorney General Resigns from APC, Joins ADC
In a major defection, a former Attorney General and senior political figure from Kebbi State resigned from the APC to join the ADC coalition. In his public statement, he lamented the country’s descent into chaos:
“Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives while the government prioritizes politics over the safety of its citizens.”
He criticized the current administration’s failure to govern with compassion and national interest, adding that his decision was based on love for Nigeria and not political ambition.
“To the people of Kebbi State, I remain your son and servant. I will never abandon you. This move is to amplify your voice, protect your interests, and restore hope to our future.”
Air Marshal Saddique Abubakar and Prof. Osunbor Join ADC
The coalition also received a significant boost with the entry of Air Marshal (retd.) Saddique Abubakar, former Chief of Air Staff and 2023 APC governorship candidate in Bauchi State, and Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, a former Edo State governor and senator.
Abubakar, who secured over 41.8% of the votes in Bauchi’s last election, joins the coalition amid growing discontent within APC ranks. Osunbor, who served as Edo Governor between 2007 and 2008, brings political depth and credibility to the alliance.
A National Movement for Change
With powerhouses from the PDP, Labour Party, APC, and SDP now under the ADC umbrella, the coalition is building a pan-Nigerian platform with grassroots engagement, political reform, and people-focused policies at its core.
The coalition vowed to be issue-based, youth-inclusive, and reform-driven, aiming to end what it described as “politics of greed and propaganda” that have stifled national progress.
With Peter Obi’s moral authority, David Mark’s experience, Aregbesola’s administrative clout, and new defectors from the APC joining in, the ADC-led coalition appears ready to reshape Nigeria’s political future.
