My first encounter with the remarkable personality of Nurudeen Akinade came through a conversation with Chief Sikiru Adeyemi Soladoye during Nuru Akinade student days, when he served as President of the Federation of Ibadan Students Union (FIBSU) at The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
While this enigma was passionately leading and committing himself to Ibadan causes at home, I was similarly engaged in mobilizing our Ibadan compatriots in the United Kingdom toward noble causes for the development of Ibadanland. It was in that shared spirit of service that our paths crossed — a relationship that dates back to 1998.
From his days as a vibrant student leader, Nurudeen Akinade has continued to evolve with grace and purpose. He became the youngest member of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) Executive Council, and was later deservedly honoured with the title of Asiwaju. Together, we have shared many struggles and triumphs — working tirelessly for reforms and progressive initiatives through the CCII platform, all aimed at the advancement of our beloved Ibadanland.It was therefore no surprise when the Onilari family put him forward as their Mogaji, making him the rare bearer of both the Asiwaju and Mogaji titles simultaneously.
His visionary leadership gave birth to the Ibadan Compounds Security Initiative, generously supported and funded by Apesin Chief Dotun Sanusi of Ilaji fame, alongside other critical stakeholders. Under his coordination, the Ibadan Compounds Security Group has built a formidable network to combat thuggery, lawlessness, and insecurity — fostering a safer, more peaceful Ibadan.The history of the new Olubadan Palace cannot be written without acknowledging his invaluable contributions — among many other impactful interventions he has made in the development of Ibadanland.Asiwaju Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade also holds the record as the youngest-ever Chairman of the Ibadan Cultural Festival Planning Committee, a position he held for two consecutive terms, delivering excellence and innovation. His legacy in that role remains unmatched.In recognition of his outstanding achievements, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), at this year’s Grand Finale held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, conferred upon him the Grand Ambassador of Ibadan Culture (GAIC) — alongside other distinguished recipients: Chief Waidi Ekun, Colonel (Chief) Mrs. Adenike Akerele (Rtd), and myself, Balogun Gaphar Babatunde Ojetola, GAIC. This recognition is of humongous significance, and one we all hold in deep honor.Full of energy, candor, and unshakable dependability, Asiwaju Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade continues to soar like an eagle — breaking new grounds and redefining service and leadership.
During the recently concluded coronation ceremonies of our revered monarch, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, Arùsà I, his commitment and performance across various committees were exceptional — ensuring perfection at every stage. We pray that the reign of our King will be long, memorable, and blessed with peace and prosperity for all Ibadan sons and daughters.As we concluded that historic celebration, yet another history was written when Asiwaju Mogaji Dr. Nurudeen Akinade’s PhD thesis was presented to the newly crowned Olubadan — a moment of immense pride and fulfillment.
And now, as he marks his birthday today, I, Balogun Gaphar Babatunde Ojetola, on behalf of my family, celebrate Asiwaju Mogaji Dr. Nurudeen Akinade, PhD, Mogaji Onilari, and Grand Ambassador of Ibadan Culture (GAIC) — a brother, patriot, and true son of Ibadanland.
