Kemi Bedenoch has been elected as the new leader of the UK’s Conservative party.
She became the first black woman to lead a major political party in the UK after defeatng Robert Jenrick. She had 53,806 votes while her opponent had 41,388. The result was announced by the party on Saturday morning.
Badenoch was born in the UK to Nigerian parents and spent part of her childhood in Nigeria . She has been a member of the UK parliament since 2017 and has held various positions in the government. Her victory is seen as a significant milestone for black women in politics.
