A youth football coach, Ashgar, collapsed and died during a training camp organised by Bayern Munich in Riesa, Saxony, Germany.
The coach, originally from Afghanistan, collapsed on the pitch at Feralpi Arena during a lunch break on Monday.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and took him to the hospital, but he later passed away.
Ashgar had been coaching an under-13 team in Austria before joining the Bayern youth camp, which had drawn 119 children from Riesa and nearby towns.
BSG Stahl Riesa, a local partner of the camp, confirmed the tragic news on its website o Thursday.
“During the lunch break, Ashgar collapsed on the pitch. In the afternoon, we received the heartbreaking news that he had lost his life in the hospital,” BSG Stahl Riesa wrote.
Out of respect for Ashgar and his family, Bayern Munich ended the camp early.
In a message to parents, the club wrote, “We are all dismayed and shocked by the tragic incident during our FC Bayern Campus training session in Riesa… Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family, relatives, and friends.”
The club also arranged psychological support for the children, coaches, and families affected.
Ashgar’s Austrian club, TSV Hartberg, paid tribute on Instagram, “With his always friendly, helpful, and professional manner, he was very popular with all players, parents, colleagues, and officials. His sudden death leaves a deep void in our club.”
