The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Major General Olufemi Oluyede, faced questioning from the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Defence and Army as part of the process to confirm him as the substantive Chief of Army Staff.
The screening began with a public session where the nominee presented his professional background and answered two preliminary questions. However, the committee soon moved the proceedings behind closed doors to discuss more sensitive issues.
Oluyede’s nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu followed the passing of the former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who had been battling health issues prior to his death.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence emphasized that the hearing was not just about assessing the nominee’s qualifications but also about formulating a clear strategy to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
“Our goal today is to evaluate the nominee’s credentials and vision while working towards a collective roadmap to tackle the nation’s pressing security issues. This House remains committed to providing effective oversight and support for the Armed Forces in ensuring Nigeria’s safety and prosperity,” he said.
The closed-door session is expected to delve into Oluyede’s plans for addressing major security concerns, including insurgency, banditry, and other threats, as part of efforts to ensure stability in the country.
