The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the implementation of strict security measures across Nigeria to ensure a safe and peaceful environment during the country’s 64th Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday. In a statement released by Police Spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Monday, it was emphasized that security forces, in collaboration with other agencies, will be deployed to secure key event locations and major highways nationwide, preventing potential threats to lives and property.
Despite the federal government’s announcement of a low-key celebration, the IGP has ordered the deployment of personnel and tactical resources to ensure maximum security. Egbetokun also instructed officers to engage the public with professionalism, courtesy, and firmness. He extended his congratulations to Nigerians, urging them to reflect on the nation’s journey, recognizing both its challenges and successes.
The IGP reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining peace, protecting the nation, and upholding the rule of law. He encouraged citizens to foster unity and work towards a better future for all Nigerians.
This security directive coincides with the planned #EndBadGovernance protest, with some groups aiming to use the Independence Day to voice dissatisfaction with the current administration’s handling of the economy and governance. A previous protest in August, calling for solutions to issues such as rising food prices, fuel costs, and declining living standards, was cut short by government forces. However, organizers are determined to press on with demonstrations during the national holiday, criticizing the current government for worsening hardship and pushing more citizens into poverty.
