On the occasion of the 2024 Independence Day anniversary, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Nigerians to reaffirm their commitment to nationalism and resist what it describes as the totalitarianism and exploitation imposed by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, the PDP emphasized the importance of the day as a moment to defend democracy and national sovereignty. The party urged citizens not to succumb to the alleged oppressive tactics of the APC administration, which it claims seeks to undermine the Constitution, stifle citizen engagement, and transform Nigeria into a state ruled by a privileged few who treat others as subjugated individuals.
The PDP stressed that Independence Day should not only be marked by parades and speeches but should also reflect the freedom of citizens to express themselves, pursue legitimate goals, and actively participate in the democratic process through fair elections. It highlighted that true independence is rooted in respect for the rule of law and the constitutional rights of citizens, upheld by a transparent and accountable government dedicated to the welfare of the people.
The party lamented the APC’s impact on Nigeria’s political landscape, claiming that it has systematically undermined the principles of independence. It described the situation as an irony, stating that the APC’s governance has eroded the very essence of independence that should be celebrated, due to its policies that adversely affect citizens’ lives and their ability to engage in governance.
According to the PDP, the APC appears more focused on perpetuating a state of bondage, disregarding citizens’ rights while imposing hardship, suppressing dissent, and institutionalizing corruption and exploitation as state policies. The opposition party criticized the APC for reversing the advancements made during the PDP’s tenure in promoting democracy, personal freedoms, and economic development across various sectors.
The PDP expressed concern over the APC’s apparent insensitivity, characterized by false claims of progress amidst significant failures. It urged the ruling party to acknowledge Nigeria’s independence and the sovereignty of its people, calling for a reassessment of policies that are detrimental to the populace.
The party further demanded an immediate reduction in fuel prices and measures to stabilize the Naira, advocating for a shift in resources to revitalize the struggling productive sector.
