Mohammed Babangida, the son of former military President Ibrahim Babangida, has formally declined his appointment as chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BoA, citing personal and professional reasons.
In a letter dated July 21, 2025, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Babangida conveyed his “sincere gratitude” for the nomination, calling it “a true privilege to be thought worthy of such a strategic role in advancing the nation’s agricultural and economic development.”
However, he revealed that after “careful reflection and consultation,” he had reached the decision to decline the role.
“This decision was not made lightly,” Babangida stated. “It stems from a convergence of personal and professional considerations which, at this time, would not allow me to serve with the level of focus and commitment the position rightly demands.”
Despite turning down the appointment, Babangida reaffirmed his support for the Tinubu administration’s national development goals. “I remain fully committed to the vision of a prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria under your leadership,” he assured the president. “I continue to hold your administration in the highest regard and stand ready to support national development in other ways where my expertise may be of service.”
“Thank you once again for your confidence in me. I am deeply appreciative,” Babangida concluded.
His decision came at a time when the agricultural sector was receiving renewed focus from the federal government as part of its broader economic diversification agenda. The Bank of Agriculture, a key institution in this effort, plays a central role in supporting agribusiness and rural development across Nigeria.
