NATO should replicate Ukrainian drone warfare against Russia – Boyechko

Yuriy Boyechko, head of Hope for Ukraine, has called on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to recognize Ukraine’s leadership in drone warfare amid growing Russian threats in the region.

The global change advocate, in a statement on Monday, advised Europe and NATO to learn from Ukrainian military instructors about how to fight and win the drone war, a modern battle trend.

The Ukrainian army “is the strongest in Europe,” Boyechko emphasized, saying only Ukraine and Russia possess armies that have made significant breakthroughs in technological innovation.

The nations are engaged in “a new type of warfare—unlike anything the EU, USA, or China has ever experienced,” he stated. “Drone technologies implemented in the Ukraine-Russia war have completely revolutionized modern combat.”

Last Wednesday’s Russian drone incursion into Poland and the possibility of similar episodes caused the North Atlantic alliance to establish ‘Eastern Sentry‘, a military activity aimed at tackling challenges associated with drones.

Citing reports indicating that 19 drones penetrated Polish airspace, but only 3 or 4 were intercepted with missiles costing over $1.5 million each, Boyechko tagged the current air support system an unsustainable defense model.

He recalled that on September 13, three days after the incident in Poland, a Russian drone, in another airspace violation, entered Romanian territory and remained there for almost an hour before returning to Ukraine.

With Europe’s assumption that the Russia’s actions would remain within Ukraine now disproved, Boyechko highlighted the need to reframe the discussions about Ukraine receiving security guarantees.

The non-profit organization leader urged European countries to collectively prioritize funding the Ukrainian defense industry, predicting more Russian drone attacks across the continent.

“Putin senses fear in both Europe and the United States,” Boyechko noted. “He will exploit that fear and their unpreparedness to carry out further provocations, using the data he gathers to prepare for a potential full-scale war with NATO.”
