National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced its plans to launch the National Intermediate Games, an innovative initiative aimed at bridging the gap between grassroots development and elite professional sports levels.
Targeting athletes aged 16 to 18, the Intermediate Games will provide a competitive platform that complements existing national events.
In a statement released to journalists yesterday by the Director of Press, Dr (Mrs) Kehinde Ajayi, the Commission highlighted that while the National Youth Games currently caters to athletes under the age of 15, and the National Sports Festival accommodates elite athletes without age restrictions, there has long been a significant gap for emerging talents who find themselves between these categories. The Intermediate Games is set to address this crucial need, facilitating a smooth transition for young athletes on their journey towards professional and international success.
Nigeria’s grassroots system has consistently produced world-class athletes. From the Golden Eaglets’ remarkable five FIFA U-17 World Cup victories since their inaugural win in China in 1985, to the Nigerian female junior basketball team’s impressive performances at the FIBA World Championship in the Czech Republic, the nation’s youth have consistently showcased extraordinary potential.
The Intermediate Games will further harness this potential, preparing athletes for international competitions such as U-18 and U-20 tournaments while nurturing the next generation of elite and professional stars.
Notable sports icons such as Gabriel Okon, Deji Aliu, Olusoji Fasuba, Nduka Ugbade, John Obi Mikel, Rashidat Ajibade, and Victor Osimhen exemplify talents who have risen from grassroots levels to achieve global acclaim. The National Intermediate Games will serve as a launchpad for the next wave of such heroes, ensuring Nigeria’s continued prominence on the global sporting stage.
