Nollywood film becomes highest-grossing movie for a non-holiday period in 2024
Nollywood’s latest sensation, Queen Lateefah, has made a remarkable debut, raking in ₦57.7 million in its opening weekend. Directed by Adeoluwa Owu and produced by Wumi Toriola, the film has set a new record as the highest-grossing Nollywood movie during a non-holiday period and the top opening weekend for an independently distributed title in 2024.
Distributed by Cinemax Nigeria, the film’s impressive start was confirmed in an official announcement: “Queen Lateefahjust hit ₦57.7 million on its opening weekend! Thank you all for the love and support,” Cinemax Nigeria shared on their social media platforms.
The movie, which premiered in cinemas on September 27, 2024, follows the life of Lateefah Adeleke, a 30-year-old businesswoman whose glamorous image unravels when she crosses paths with Jide Rhodes, a 35-year-old businessman. Behind Lateefah’s high-society persona lies a story of abject poverty, eccentric neighbors, and a web of lies that make her life appear far more luxurious than it truly is.
The star-studded cast includes Kunle Remi, Femi Adebayo, Nancy Isime, Bimbo Manuel, Elvina Ibru, Enioluwa, and Gbugbemi Ejeye, adding to the film’s draw.
With such a strong debut, industry experts project the movie could exceed ₦250 million in ticket sales. Shock NG commented on its potential longevity in cinemas, stating that Queen Lateefah may continue to surpass expectations and solidify its place as a box-office hit.
