Abuja, Nigeria – The United States has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with Nigeria, revealing that trade between both countries surged to $13 billion in 2024.
U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., made this known at a high-profile event hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja to commemorate the 249th Independence Day of the United States.
Speaking at the “Louisiana Night”-themed reception, Ambassador Mills highlighted the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the U.S., rooted in shared democratic ideals and a mutual commitment to peace, prosperity, and freedom.
“We celebrate the shared spirit of freedom and democratic values that unite both countries—our belief in self-governance, human dignity, and fundamental rights,” Mills said.
The Ambassador noted that the $13 billion trade volume reflects a deepening economic bond, which has generated jobs and investment opportunities for citizens in both countries.
Beyond trade, Mills pointed to growing collaboration in areas such as military cooperation, counterterrorism, public health, and humanitarian assistance. He stressed that both nations are working hand-in-hand to address regional and global challenges, including climate change, security, and democratic governance.
Representing the Nigerian government, Dr. Dunoma Omar-Ahmed, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, congratulated the United States on its national day and underscored the strategic importance of U.S.-Nigeria ties.
“The enduring partnership between our two nations remains critical for regional stability, economic growth, and the collective aspirations of our people,” Omar-Ahmed stated.
The celebration drew senior government officials, diplomats, business executives, and development partners. Guests enjoyed cultural showcases, music performances, and a culinary journey through Louisiana’s rich heritage, highlighting the event’s “Louisiana Night” theme.
